Hungary and Slovakia show two different ways of weakening the fight against corruption.

In Hungary, penalties for corruption were formally increased. But the real problem is that corruption around Viktor Orbán is hardly investigated. If it were investigated properly, much of his political and business circle would be in serious trouble.

Slovakia has taken the opposite path. It lowered penalties for corruption, shortened limitation periods for certain crimes, and increased the financial thresholds from which some acts can be prosecuted as criminal offences.

The result? The amendment to the Criminal Code immediately helped dozens of people who would otherwise be facing criminal prosecution.

This is not a reform of justice. It is a systemic protection of selected people from accountability.
