Brussels did not trust Andrej Babiš. Czech courts have repeatedly confirmed that the conflict of interest was not merely a political dispute, but a genuine legal issue. Yet companies belonging to the Agrofert group continued to receive billions in subsidies while he was serving in government.

One thing must be said clearly: responsibility does not lie solely with the recipient of the subsidies. If public funds were awarded in violation of the rules, accountability must also extend to those who approved, authorized, and paid out those subsidies. Public officials are not mere bystanders; they are a key part of the system designed to protect taxpayers’ money.

We cannot demand the recovery of billions while pretending that no one is responsible for how these funds were approved and disbursed. The rule of law works only when the same standards apply to everyone — politicians, businesses, and public administration alike.

Citizens have the right to know who made these decisions, who ignored the warnings, and who will be held accountable for the losses that may ultimately be borne by taxpayers. No one should be above the law, and no public servant should be exempt from responsibility for decisions involving public money.
