Dear Slovaks, dear Hungarians, dear friends,
I’m not writing to you as a politician, but as your neighbor. As someone who shares the same space, the same experience. And in many ways, the same fate. What’s happening in your countries concerns us too, just as what’s happening in ours concerns you.
In 1989, we knew exactly what we wanted. We wanted to break away from Russia and leave communism behind. We wanted freedom, democracy, and a place in the West. It was a conscious and free choice made by all three of our nations.
And today?
I look around and can’t help but wonder whether we’re starting to forget. Our governments are once again looking toward the Kremlin. In the Czech Republic, the government is taking inspiration from laws coming out of Moscow. Hungarian politicians travel to Moscow as if looking for direction. In Slovakia, there is open admiration for a regime that once kept us under its thumb. Some politicians are even looking to the Kremlin for help in elections.
This is not what we wanted.
But there is a way forward. Each of us can do something about it.
Hungarians will have their say on April 12. And if you choose to turn away from pro-Kremlin politicians, you will send a strong signal to the rest of Central Europe as well. I believe most of us still know where we belong. That 1989 was not an accident, but a clear choice.
Dear neighbors,
I’m writing this as someone who cares about you. And about Central Europe being strong, confident, and free. Not bending to those who once took our freedom away.
I’m rooting for all of us.
