SLOVAKIA’S “INTERESTS” FIRST — OR THE KREMLIN’S?
Prime Minister Fico has once again discovered the national interest. Conveniently, it flows through the Druzhba pipeline.
I find it remarkable how quickly a “technical issue” turns into a grand geopolitical injustice when the commodity in question is Russian oil — pardon me, “our oil,” which just happens to originate in Russia.
Claiming it is not Russian oil because there is an EU exemption is creative, I admit. But rebranding does not change reality. If it comes from Russia, it finances Russia — regardless of the accounting label attached to it.
Energy security is a legitimate concern. I fully respect that. But if a leader systematically resists diversification, questions sanctions, and consistently echoes narratives that align with Moscow’s interests, then speaking about European solidarity as if Slovakia were a victim rings hollow.
Let me be clear: when you prioritize continued dependence on Russian resources in the middle of Russia’s brutal war against Ukraine, you are not defending European unity. You are objectively acting in line with the Kremlin’s interests — whether you admit it or not.
Slovakia has the right to energy security. Absolutely. But Europe also has the right to expect that its leaders will not blur the line between defending national interests and defending the geopolitical agenda of the Kremlin.
Solidarity works both ways. So does responsibility.
