At a time when Ukraine is defending not only its sovereignty but the security of the entire European continent, using energy as leverage is unacceptable. Emergency electricity supplies are not a political bargaining chip. They are part of Europe’s collective responsibility to ensure that a war-torn country can keep hospitals running, homes heated, and critical infrastructure functioning.
Linking oil deliveries to emergency energy assistance during wartime sends a dangerous message. It weakens European unity and undermines the trust that binds us together in the European Union. Solidarity cannot be selective, and it certainly cannot be transactional when lives are at stake.
Slovakia is an important member of the European family. But with that membership comes responsibility. Weaponizing electricity against Ukraine plays directly into the hands of the Kremlin and damages the credibility of the entire region.
Europe must remain united, principled, and firm. Our strength lies in solidarity — not in ultimatums.
