Four years ago, the world was shocked by the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The overwhelming majority of the democratic world clearly stood behind the country that had been attacked. Over four years of fighting, Ukrainians have shown extraordinary courage. The criminality of the Russian regime has exceeded even the worst fears. And Europe remains Ukraine’s largest and most reliable supporter. This support must not change. The initial shock may have faded, but the aggression continues. Those who once stayed silent are now openly calling for an end to support for Ukraine and for stripping it of the means to defend itself. The proximity of war has, unfortunately, become part of our daily lives. We have grown used to the fact that innocent people are dying every day just beyond the borders of the European Union. Meanwhile, Russia today poses a greater threat to the rest of Europe than it did before. We must not repeat the mistake we made after the illegal annexation of Crimea. Because if we were to hand Ukraine over to Putin now, we would soon be asking ourselves what we are willing to sacrifice next.
